Rowing has long been a prestigious sport of elite high schools, colleges, and Olympians.
Its mystique dates from the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race near London in 1829.
In 1852, Harvard and Yale staged the first United States intercollegiate athletic event of
any kind, a two-mile race on Lake Winnipesaukee (Harvard won). To this day, the two
schools line up against each other every spring. Closer to home, the prestigious Head of
the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Massachusetts has grown into one of the world's
largest rowing event, drawing top high school, collegiate, and club crews from around the
world.
Girls and boys in grades 9-12 are elegible to join the Wayland-Weston Crew, a dual-town club sport. The goal of Wayland-Weston Crew (WWC) is to develop one of the premier scholastic rowing programs in the Northeast.
No previous rowing experience is necessary! Rowers and coxswains needed! The
WWC program is off to a fast start because of the status as a dual-town club. The fall
season will focus on developing proper technique and good conditioning. Participation in
at lease one regatta is planned. In the spring season you will be able to build on your
fall experience and take part in an expanded schedule or regattas. Racing will include
competition among some of the region's top high school, collegiate freshman and club crews.
Your enthusiasm and dedication will help the WWC take steps toward varsity status within the
school departments of Wayland and Weston. So join the fun and get
into the best shape of your life!
What is rowing? When and where do we practice? Who will we race? How much will it cost?
