This past Sunday (May 29, 2011) the squads traveled to Lowell, MA for the 2011 MPSRA Spring State Championship Regatta to wrap up the season. The State Championship is a combination of individual crew’s performance which earns a certain number of points based on placement the are tallied at the end of the day to determine the boy, girls, and overall team state champions. Every crew that Wayland- Weston raced this weekend not only contributed points to the tally, but came away with a medal!

Highlights for the Novice squads were a blowout win in the boys 1st novice 8, who won by 20 seconds! The Girls 1st Novice boat got nipped by a very strong crew from Bromfield by just over a second, coming home with the silver medal. The 2nd novice crews from the Boys and Girls sides both won their race and the girls novice 4 placed 3rd!

The Boys Varsity squad had a very strong day, winning 2 of the 3 events they competed in. The Boys 3rd varsity got edged out by .7 of a second by a strong crew from Hingham. The Boys 2nd Varsity 8 rowed a strong final besting the crew from Brookline by 2.5 seconds. And wrapping up the day the Boys 1V lead from start to finish taking out Bromfield by 2 seconds.

The big highlight for the Girls Varsity squad was a sweep of the Varsity 8’s. The Girls 1V, 2V, and 3V all won their events! All three crews won by three seconds or less. The 3V bested Brookline’s crew by just under 3 seconds, leading the race from start to finish. The Girls 2V battled through a very strong crew from Bromfield who they had they to beat this year, winning by 1.7 seconds. The Girls 1V was one of the closest of the day with W/W and Bromfield rowing bowball to bowball (dead even) for the first 1200 meters of the 1500 meter course. The girls pulled out the win with a furious sprint in the last 30 strokes to take home the gold medal by 1.02 seconds!
